Curly Queued: Quick Hair Tutorial

As I’ve mentioned before, I have wrestled with my Latina hair for years: tugging, straightening, relaxing…poor fluffy poof!

It has taken many years to learn how to tame my hair without completely erasing my ethnicity and damaging it in the process.

I have to say, there’s a message here for all of us:

You can enhance what you have while embracing your unique look, whether it’s your hair, your skin or your body type.

Be you, beautiful ones!

The steps below work best for hair that has some natural curl and body in my experience, but try it even if your hair is naturally straight.

Lately, I’ve been “lazy” curling it with these steps.

1) Towel dry

2) Apply silicone or morrocan oil serum  all over except bangs and roots. I’m using Suave Professionals Morrocan Infusion Morracon Argon Styling Oil because I bought it cheap after Christmas, plus it smells musky and delicious!

3) Partially dry your hair until it’s still moist, but not sopping wet, working the product through your hair with your fingers as you dry.

I tend to pull down to stretch the curl, but if your hair isn’t curly, you might try scrunching the serum through as you dry.

It will look mostly dry, but feel somewhat wet, like this:

4) Apply more serum if it’s curly, not so much if your hair is more sleek or thin.

5)Section off your hair into two or three horizontal tiers, then spritz each section with a maximum hold hair spray before you curl.

6) Start with the bottom layer, then, using a large 1 to 1.5 inch barrel curling iron, clamp the barrel at the root of a 2 or 3 inch thick strand.

7) Slowly rotate the barrel and wiggle the clamp as you work hair strand around the barrel, like this (videos will download, then you can click on them):

Here’s a video showing what my hand is doing. I’m tightening and loosening the clamp of the curling iron as I work the strand around the barrel.

Let me know how your hair turned out!

Chao, bellisima.
